The European Commission has approved General Electric’s US$9.5bn acquisition of Amersham Plc, according to the Dow Jones. The deal is important to GE, which has worked hard to overcome its rancorous history with European authorities and wants to continue expanding its medical division. Amersham has three main business areas: medical diagnostics, operating as Amersham Health, and protein separations and discovery systems, together operating as Amersham Biosciences. Amersham’s diagnostic pharmaceutical and life sciences business will add new, high-growth platforms to GE Medical’s diagnostic imaging, services and healthcare IT businesses. Millipore and HyClone form bioprocessing alliance In the US, Millipore has formed a bioprocessing alliance with HyClone Laboratories, which develops culture consumables and disposable bioprocess liquid containment products. The companies say that the move will give biopharmaceutical manufacturers one supplier contact for the design, development and validation support of disposable manufacturing systems combining HyClone’s bioprocess containers with Millipore’s disposable separation products. Disposable processing systems were initially seen as cost-saving measures, but now proven benefits include lower costs, less downtime, enhanced process security and greater process flexibility. Disposable manufacturing also enables companies to run multiple products in a single plant without risking cross-contamination. Through this relationship, HyClone and Millipore will jointly address customers’ needs for disposable combined products for pilot
plant, process development and production applications. Future innovations required to meet evolving industry demands for combined products will come through the partners’ complementary R&D efforts in separation technology, validation and applications engineering. HyClone, which is owned by Fisher Scientific International, manufactures sera, liquid and powdered media, sterile liquids and sterile liquid handling systems to support research and production of biopharmaceuticals.
