The International College of Dentists used this venue to announce its 2002 awards. For the first time in years, 2 orthodontic publications were honored in this competition. Richard A. Levy received the Platinum Scroll First Place in Division II for the changes he has made in the MASO Journal, a publication of the Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists. As its editor, Levy “propelled a small 2-color publication into a contemporary 4-color journal. Format, graphics, and articles improved to offer more timely information to the readers.” The American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics received a Platinum Citation award for its innovative use of a front-cover triptych on the April 2001 issue that celebrated 100 years of orthodontics as a specialty. According to the International College of Dentists, the citations recognize a publication’s merit. Dr Charles M. The American Dental Association and Crest Healthy Smiles 2010 have joined forces for “Give Kids a Smile” day. On February 21, 2003, dentists around the country will provide free dental services, educational materials, and oral health care products to underserved children. Crest Healthy Smiles 2010 will donate Crest toothbrushes and toothpaste for participating dentists to distribute. The ADA created the “Give Kids a Smile” program to focus attention on what the Surgeon General has called a “silent epidemic” of oral disease affecting children from low-income families. As noted in the Surgeon General’s report in 2000, “Oral Health in America,” dental decay is the most common disease affecting US children, occurring at 5 times the rate of asthma and 7 times that of hay fever. Millions of children suffer from untreated but easily preventable oral diseases. “In one sense, ‘Give Kids a Smile’ is nothing new— dentists routinely provide free and discounted care to people who

otherwise couldn’t afford it, and Crest Healthy Smiles 2010 is a prime example of that company’s deep and longstanding commitment to improving access to oral health for people everywhere,” said ADA President, D. Gregory Chadwick, DDS. “What’s different about this program is that in addition to helping a lot of kids, we’re trying to effect real change in the state of oral health in America by calling attention to the extent of untreated dental disease and the need to improve access to dental care.” For more information, log on to www. ada.org or call Crest Healthy Smiles 2010 at 1-877-289-6322.

Dugoni receives kudos from California orthodontists The California Association of Orthodontists selected Dr Arthur A. Dugoni, dean of the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, to receive the 2002 Distinguished Service Award. Presented October 7 in Monterey, the award recognizes Dugoni’s lifetime contributions to dental education and practice, and his leadership role and advocacy in promoting excellence and progress in the specialty of orthodontics, dental education, and the organized profession. Dugoni has served as dean of the School of Dentistry since 1978. An exemplary educator, practitioner, and leader, he is one of the nation’s most respected figures in the profession. In 1969, as chair of the orthodontic department, he pioneered the school’s earlytreatment orthodontic clinic, which now operates under the direction of his son, Dr Steven Dugoni. Throughout his career, Dugoni has served as president of the ADA, the American Association of Dental Schools, and the California Dental Association, and as treasurer of the FDI World Dental Federation. He also served as president of the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists and the American Board of Orthodontics.

“I am deeply appreciative to have received this award from the California Association of Orthodontists. Dentistry is a wonderful profession, and orthodontics is an awesome specialty,” stated Dugoni. “I’ve been blessed to have been asked often to serve our profession in so many different capacities over my 54year career. For me, the ride has been, and continues to be, a labor of love. Confucius said it best: ‘Find something you love to do, and you never work a day in your life.’ And so it has been for me.”
