News, comments, and service announcements Canadian Association of Orthodontists elects new president, officers Paul H. Korne, DDS, MCID, a native of Montreal, Quebec, was elected president of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists (CAO) at the 2003 annual meeting in Ottawa. Korne received his DDS degree from McGill University in 1986 and completed a multidiscipline residency program at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, in 1986-1987. After practicing general dentistry for less than a year in St Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, he entered the Graduate Orthodontics Program at the University of Western Ontario, receiving his master of clinical dentistry degree in orthodontics in 1990. He returned to Montreal, where he maintains a private practice as a certified specialist in orthodontics. He is also an assistant professor in the Department of Orthodontics of the Faculty of Dentistry at McGill University. Dr Korne has served on the Board of Directors since 1998, when he was appointed the Quebec representative to the board. He later assumed the offices of second and first vice-president and president-elect. During those terms, he was also the orthodontic liaison officer to the Canadian Dental Association and its newly formed committee on Specialist
Affairs, and he worked on the Constitution and Bylaws Committees of the CAO. Paul and his wife, Michelle, have 3 children: daughter Ella, 2, and twins Andrew and Benjamin, 8 months. Also elected at the 2003 meeting were Amanda Maplethorp, presidentelect; Gerry Solomon, first vice president; Bob Hatheway, second vice president; Richard Marcus, secretary; and Gordon Organ, treasurer. The 2004 Scientific Session will be held at the Westin Resort and Spa, Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, September 9-11.
Arthur Dugoni receives California Dental Association’s highest honor Dr Arthur A. Dugoni, dean of the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, received the Dale F. Redig Distinguished Service Award on November 8, 2003, during the California Dental Association’s annual House of Delegates meeting in Sacramento. The award was named in honor of Dr Dale F. Redig, who served as CDA’s executive director for 18 years. It was established in 2001 to honor people who have provided extraordinary contributions to the vision and
goals of the CDA. Dugoni is the second person to receive the award. Redig, also a former dean of the UOP School of Dentistry, presented the award. “I consider this recognition very special,” said Dugoni, “because it bears the name of a giant visionary, Dr Dale F. Redig, who guided the CDA to its current level of excellence and promise.” “The award follows the collective heart of CDA and symbolizes extraordinary vision, passion, and leadership,” said Speaker of the House Matt Campbell. Dugoni, an exemplary educator, practitioner, and leader, is one of the most respected figures in the profession. He has served as president of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Dental Schools, and the California Dental Association, and as treasurer of the Federation Dentaire Internationale World Dental Federation. He is currently president of the ADA Foundation. “Dugoni has set the standard for all organized dentistry leaders to follow,” stated Debra Finney, current CDA President.
