NEWS, COMMENTS, AND SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS Year 2000 Jarabak Award Winners Announced The American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF) has selected Dr James J. Baldwin and Dr William R. Proffit as co-recipients of the Louise Ada Jarabak Memorial Teachers and Research Award for 2000. The Jarabak Award, established in 1983 by Dr Joseph Jarabak in honor of his late wife, recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to orthodontic teaching and research. Drs Baldwin and Proffit will be recognized during the opening ceremonies of the 100th AAO Annual Session, the 5th International Orthodontic Congress, and the 2nd meeting of the World Federation of Orthodontists. Baldwin earned his dental degree from Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1954 and completed his orthodontic training at Indiana University in 1956. He also has a master’s degree in physics from Yale University. In addition to maintaining a private practice until 1995, Dr Baldwin has been a part-time faculty member at
Indiana University’s School of Dentistry since 1956. Baldwin, one of the first people to develop the segmented arch technique for tooth movement, is acknowledged as one of the top authorities on the mechanical aspects of orthodontics. Dr Baldwin is a diplomate of The American Board of Orthodontics. He is also a past president of the Indiana Association of Orthodontists, the Midwestern component of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists, and the National Body of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists. Dr Proffit received his dental degree from the University of North Carolina in 1959, added a doctorate degree in physiology from the Medical College of Virginia in 1962, and completed his master’s degree in orthodontics from the University of Washington in 1963. Dr Proffit, who has taught since 1965, has been a professor and the chair of the Department of Orthodontics at the University of North Car-
olina School of Dentistry since 1975. In 1992, Dr Proffit was appointed as Kenan professor, which is a distinguished professor position in the university. Before joining the faculty at the University of North Carolina, he had served as chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Florida and as chair of the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Kentucky. Dr Proffit’s textbook Contemporary Orthodontics is considered the definitive work for beginning dentists studying orthodontics. Dr Proffit’s honors and awards include the 1998 Helen and B. F. Dewel Award, the 1994 Norton M. Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research from the American Dental Association, and the 1987 Merit Award from the National Institute of Dental Research. He was selected to give the John Valentine Mershon Memorial Lecture at the 1997 AAO Annual Session, and he also delivered the Jacob A. Salzmann Lecture during the 1991 AAO Annual Session.
