Report on a symposium G. Dave Singh, DDSc, PhD, BDS Center for Craniofacial Disorders, University of Puerto Rico Advances in the modeling of form: Clinical and computational interfaces was the title of a symposium held in honor of Dr Melvin Moss, Columbia University, NY, on October 10, 2003. It recognized his contributions to dental science, and the date coincided with the 250th anniversary of Columbia University. Dr Moss is known widely for developing and disseminating the functional matrix hypothesis (FMH),1 which was formulated by van der Klaauw.2 Throughout his professional life, Dr Moss has been a staunch advocate of the FMH, the principles of which form the basis for many clinical, including orthodontic, treatments. Although the underlying concepts of the theory remain obscure to some, its fundamental correctness is being borne out as new clinical treatments are undertaken and tissue bioengineering techniques emerge.
