Pump Industry Awards: the 2006 finalists The Pump Industry Awards’ judges have made their choice and created a shortlist of finalists for the Pump Industry Awards ceremony, which takes place in Coventry, UK, on 17 October 2006. Here are the names of the finalists – now is your chance to vote for your preferred nominee.

T

his year’s call for nominations for the Pump Industry Awards received a record response, with over 80 nominations reflecting the breadth of pump and system engineering and innovation across the globe. The quality of nominations was also extremely high, making the choice of finalists in each category a tough one for the team of independent judges. Following a full-day of discussion, deliberation and some healthy debate, 22 finalists were selected, and listed below are those companies and individuals who have made it through to the next stage. The online voting facility opens in July, so to help us determine the very best of the best, just review the entries below and go online to get your vote registered at www.pumpindustryawards. com. The six category winners will be determined by the final number of votes cast, coupled with the ranking as established by the judges, so to have your say, make sure you vote today!

Technical Innovation of the Year Sponsored by ITT Jabsco

Digital Dosing Pump with Integrated Flow Monitor by ALLDOS For years, engineers have been using external flow switches to determine if a dosing pump is dosing or not. The TrueDos Flow

Monitor digital dosing pump from Alldos now offers this as an integral feature within the dosing pump by constantly monitoring the pressure within the dosing head and immediately alarms out on error on loss of chemical to the dosing pump or over pressure within the discharge line. The TrueDos Flow Monitor pumps can also be profibus enabled and have integrated diaphragm rupture detection. Pump Innovation & Optimisation Software by BLUE RIDGE NUMERICS CFdesign software is empowering small and large companies alike to develop innovative, economical pump solutions in less time. Engineers get the total pump performance picture before building a single prototype. On average development costs are cut by 65%. All ‘what if’ studies are done on the PC and physical testing is saved for final validation. Interactive 3D images guide decision-making and reveal product knowledge not available from any flow bench. As an example, an engineering team recently used CFdesign to assess 70+ permutations within a tight schedule and improve pump performance by nearly 2X, giving entrée to the high efficiency pump market. Pump Protection using Remote Technology with the MAS 711 System by ITT FLYGT The new Flygt MAS 711 control system is designed to monitor and protect pumps, even where access is difficult, by recording and measuring performance-

related data obtained from various pump mounted sensors. Information is stored in a database of recorded measurements which enables the operator to analyse events prior to, and immediately after alarm conditions. This “black box” function helps reduce costs over the lifetime of the pump by facilitating maintenance and assuring safe operation. The MAS controlled installation can be connected to the customer’s own internal network, or even the Internet, thereby enabling the operations team to monitor each installation remotely. Active Lift Technology (Upstream Pumping) in Mechanical Seals for Water Injection Services by JOHN CRANE UK John Crane has achieved a dramatic breakthrough in arduous offshore water injection sealing technology. The resulting Active Lift mechanical seal solutions offer zero emissions and high process pressure capabilities and combine an enormous increase in reliability with substantial reductions in seal support and retrofitting costs. Driven by the latest advances in fluid dynamics, seal face design and geochemistry, Active Lift Technology has now been approved for over 100 pumps and on 10 North Sea platforms. Dynamic Injection System by VOGELSANG Vogelsang’s dynamic injection system is a new development which allows the effective pumping of solids such as raw un-screened sewage. Anglian Water was the first end-user in

the UK to incorporate the system at their Flag Fen site. Following extensive R&D in Germany, the innovative dynamic injection housing segment was developed with an angled entry that directs liquid and solid objects through the rotary lobe pump more efficiently. This innovation has increased the applications where rotary lobe pumps can be used, and has again proved the commitment Vogelsang, the inventor of the rubber lined rotary lobe pump, has to its products.

Environmental / Energy Saving Award Sponsored by Sulzer Pumps

Energy Saving through Multi-Pump Monitoring and System Optimisation by ADVANCED ENERGY MONITORING SYSTEMS (AEMS) AEMS main aim is to significantly reduce pumping costs by improving the efficiency of pumping systems. Multi-pump monitoring specifies the pump combination that results in the minimum power consumption for a given flow-rate. This service provides substantial reductions in energy usage and carbon production, thus benefiting the environment. Through verification, AEMS can ensure that its clients cut their pumping energy bill and carbon dioxide production by 15-20%, whilst also achieving short payback periods.

news business Upgrading of Boiler Feed Pumps at Fiddlers Ferry and West Burton Power Stations by FLOWSERVE PUMP DIVISION This award nomination involves upgrading a series of boiler feed pumps in two UK 2000MW coal fired power stations where lifecycle costs and reducing carbon emissions were used to justify capital investment. Based upon the running hours of the upgraded boiler feed pumps and Carbon Emissions Factors for UK Energy Use, Flowserve estimates that upon completion of the Fiddlers Ferry and West Burton upgrades the total carbon emission savings will be approximately 7.5 million KG per annum. The Grundfos Approach to the Environment by GRUNDFOS PUMPS Grundfos has been at the forefront of pump technology for many years and actively promote the general awareness of pumps as a significant, but often forgotten, energy user. One tool used as part of a multifaceted campaign has been to enter industry, national and international awards in order to promote variable speed pumps and their associated significant energy savings. Notable successes to date have been The National Business Award for Environmental Awareness in 2004, The Green Apple Award in 2005 including the overall Champion of Champions and the Green Hero Award in 2006. Dry Running Vacuum Pump by STERLING FLUID SYSTEMS UK Ultimately recognised for lowest life-cycle cost the SIHIdry is a completely dry-running vacuum pump. With no oil lubrication, service liquids, or mechanical seals, this hermetic pump protects our environment with no incremental effluent or contamination. Its integrated variable speed drive permits energy saving through matched process/pump performance and also reduces installation complexity and materials; particularly in EX-rated areas. With 63dBA at 1m, the SIHIdry is extremely quiet and

does not need acoustic enclosures. It is available with a digital interface module for direct connection to DCS circuits and for storing all documentation electronically.

Manufacturer of the Year Sponsored by World Pumps

GRUNDFOS PUMPS 2005 was an important year for the pump industry, as this was when a voluntary energylabelling scheme for pumps was introduced. The scheme, instigated by Grundfos, currently applies to domestic/small commercial circulators. Current standard pumps are often ‘D’ or ‘E’ rated however Grundfos introduced the first domestic circulator to attain an ‘A’ rating, with an annual energy consumption of 117kWh the new ALPHA Pro obliterates the 500-600 kWh norm. It is expected the scheme will become compulsory and spread to all pump types in the next few years.

packaged and tested for customers in all continents. There are 332 employees on-site and in 2005 the company had a turnover of 106 million. Its test facilities are state-of-the art and include a 30MW turbine test bed which has been recently used to test RollsRoyce RB211 turbine driven pumpsets. It has a modern service facility on-site supporting many UK installations including upgrading and retrofitting of existing equipment. TORRES PUMPS Torres Pumps is a small family business that manufacturers specialist made-to-order sliding rotary vane pumps.
