313 CYTOLOGICAL ATLAS OF CEREBROSPINAL FLUID by R. M. SCHMIDT 198 pp. with 6 16 coloured figs. and 5 tables. DM 136.-. Order - number 793 61 I 3, Johann Ambrosius Barth Leipzig. That within the last few years three atlasses on cytology of the spinal fluid are published indicates the rised interest in this field. All three atlasses have their specal qualities: whereas Kiilmel’s atlas has the best illustrations and gives an excellent general information. Oehmichen’s atlas gives far more background information. This new atlas by Schmidt, however. gives us the most complete cytological information: in more than 600 color photomicrographs not only the typical cells are presented. but also the variants and the transitional celltypes. It is a pity that there is no information about astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas. craniopharyngiomas, tumors of the pineal gland and that melanomas are only illustrated by amelanotic cells. The illustrations are only of moderate quality. Nevertheless this atlas gives us so many informative illustrations that it is well recommendated for all those working in the field of cytology of the spinal fluid. G. T. A. Bots SENSIBLE NEUROGRAPHIE by H. P. LUDIN Georg Thieme Verlag, Stuttgart, 140 pp., 71 figs., DM 58.-
1979 ISBN 3 13 5658 01 5
After a short physiological introduction on peripheral nerves, the authors give clear information on the technical approach and pitfalls for measuring sensory nerve impulses along all the peripheral nerves in the arm and leg. Also they give thoroughfull information about the reference values on several ages of the sensory nerve conduction velocity as mentioned in the literature compared with their measurements. The last chapter gives a systematic review of the pathological disturbances of peripheral nerves in several forms of neuropathy, such as diabetic, uraemic, hereditary etc. A comprehensive list of references and a register complete this informative book. This issue can be highly recommended and contains a wealth of interesting and diagnostic important information for all physicians involved in the management of patients with sensory disturbances. S. RESEARCH AND CLINICAL STUDIES IN HEADACHE. HEADACHE TODAY - AN UPDATE BY 21 EXPERTS Vol6: Headache today - an update by 2 I experts. Research and clinical studies in headache. Proceedings of the symposium on headache of the world federation of Neurology committee on headache and migraine, Amsterdam, September 1977. Basel-Mttnchen-Paris-London-New York-Sydney. 1978: S. Karger. VIII + 172 pp., 51 figs., 47 tables DM 78.ISBN 3 8055 2924 4 This volume contains the papers presented at the Symposium organised by the WFN. Research Committee on Headache and Migraine on September 13th, 1977 during the 1 Ith. International Congress of Neurology, Amsterdam. The topics cover a wide range of aspects, such as Monoamine-supertensitivity as a pathogenetic mechanism, the humoral factor underlying both the decrease in platolet MAO activity and vascular reactions in migraine, the behaviour of free fatty acids in migraine, mechanisms in dialyses headache, meteorological influences, pathogenesis of cluster headache. the part played by arteriovenous shunting in migraine, reflex vasomotor function, biofeedback, cerebral blood flow, vidual evoked potentials computerised tomography and dny-efficacity. The volume also includes the discussions of the papers as well as pertinent bibliographies. The next offers a reflection of the main avenues of research actually being carried out. In this way the reader is brought fully up to date. For the interested reader, who has a background of more than average knowledge of the field, the text is generally rewarding. The price, however. will limit its distribution to the wealthier doctors. 0. W. Bruyn
