Scholarship

Awards

For many years now, the American Microchemical Society (AMS) has been giving student awards in the amount of $500 per student in order to help undergraduate students wishing to go on to graduate school in chemistry. These awards are normally presented at the May meeting of the AMS. In 1982, in order to recognize Dr. Al Steyermark’s service to the Society as Editor of the Microchemical Journal (he served as Editor from 1963 until his death in February 1984), these awards became identified as “Al Steyermark Scholarship Awards.” Eight 1990 Al Steyermark Scholarship Awards were recently presented at the May meeting of the Society. For 1990 only, three of the awards (without indicating which three) were designated as “special purpose” awards: two awards were given in honor of Professor Kuang Lu Cheng, the 1989 recipient of the Benedetti-Pichler Award (I), and one award was given in memory of Mr. Erik Rolf Hoffmann, a long-time member of the AMS, who passed away in 1989. His obituary appears elsewhere in this issue and, as noted in the obituary, “We shall miss him; we have been better for his association” (2). The eight students receiving these awards in 1990 are Ms. Laurel Dalessio, Fairleigh Dickinson University; Ms. Hilary Eppley, Franklin and Marshall College; Mr. Harvey A. Fishman, Pennsylvania State University; Ms. Holly C. Gaede, University of Delaware; Ms. Christina M. Keaney, Fordham University; Mr. Hnag Lu, Albright College; Ms. Diana Mustillo, College of St. Elizabeth; and Ms. Sheila Y. Rao, Rutgers University, Piscataway. I congratulate all eight of these worthy recipients and wish them well in their future studies.
