Scott Bader’s new adhesives plant.
Scott Bader (www.scottbader.com) has doubled its manufacturing capacity for Crystic® bonding pastes and Crestomer® structural adhesives by installing a new adhesive manufacturing plant at its Wollaston, UK, site. The company says it is seeing growing demand for its adhesives from luxury yacht and leisure boat builders in Europe, the Middle East and the USA. Quickstep Holdings Ltd (www.quickstep.com.au) has announced a A$6 million share placement with Macquarie Funds Management, giving Macquarie a 6% stake in Quickstep. The funds are in addition to Quickstep’s recently completed A$11 million capital placement and Share Purchase Plan (SPP). UK manufacturer of multiaxial reinforcements FORMAX (www.formax.co.uk) has increased its production capacity with the addition of another Mayer multiaxial machine. The new machine has been customised for carbon production and is being installed in the company’s specialist carbon unit. German distributor FARRL GmbH has added ARAPOX epoxy resins, ARAMINE epoxy hardeners and ARACAT epoxy catalysts produced by UK firm Bitrez Ltd to its range.

TENCATE Aerospace & Armor Composites has signed a Letter of Intent to acquire Composix Co, a US manufacturer of composite armour products. The acquisition will give Dutch group TenCate a bigger presence in the USA – the largest global armour products market – and a strong position in the military vehicle armour sector. TenCate expects that the final share purchase agreement will be completed by the end of January 2008. Composix, Newark, Ohio, has annual sales of about US$100 million.
DEMAND FOR carbon fibre is expected to increase at approximately 10% annually in the next five years, but most of the leading suppliers, except SGL, Toray and Zoltek, are projected to lose market share over the next two, according to US market research firm Lucintel. The strategies of seven of the world’s leading producers of carbon fibre are profiled in the company’s new report, Worldwide Carbon Fiber Competitive Analysis and Leadership Study, 2007. Collected from a series of primary vendor interviews and secondary sources, the report examines the strategies of Cytec Industries, Hexcel, Mitsubishi Rayon Co Ltd, SGL Group, Toray Industries, Toho-Tenax, and Zoltek.
DANISH WIND turbine maker Vestas has received an order for four projects in Inner Mongolia comprising a total of 232 units of its V52-850 kW turbine. The order comes from China Guangdong Nuclear Wind Power Co Ltd, part of the China Guangdong Nuclear Group. The order includes supply and commissioning of the turbines, and a two-year maintenance and service agreement. Delivery of the turbines will begin in mid 2008 and is expected completed by the end of 2009. All turbines will be delivered from Vestas’ production facilities in Tianjin, China. Like other nuclear power developers, China Guangdong Nuclear has in recent years been diversifying its activities into 'clean' production technologies like wind power.

Exel plans job cuts in Finland FINISH PULTRUDER Exel Oyj has announced that it is to begin co-determination negotiations at its Mäntyharju factory (part of Exel’s Industry Division), to improve efficiency. The negotiations regard the lay-offs of a maximum of five salaried employees and a maximum of 12 non-salaried employees, as well as the temporary lay-offs of a maximum of 12 non-salaried employees. Exel says that operations have to be adjusted in line with the Industry Division’s Sport and Leisure market segment’s demand at the factory. One of the reasons behind this is the fact that Exel Sports has increased its procuring from the Far East. Exel; www.exel.net

ACMA revises show dates THE AMERICAN Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA), Arlington, Virginia, USA, has announced that its next COMPOSITES & POLYCON trade show will be held on 15-17 January 2009, in Tampa, Florida. During its show in October 2007, ACMA announced that it would be rescheduling its next event (originally to take place in October 2008 in Anaheim, California) because of conflicting exhibitions. The IBEX boat building show takes place in Miami in October 2008.
“Our last show in Tampa was one of our most successful ever and I’m confident that the new winter timeframe will mean even better business opportunities for our members and exhibitors," says ACMA's President John Tickle.
