THIS is the long-awaited unified presentation on this question by an acknowledged master in the field. The book (really Extrait) covers these visual pathologies as none has done before, and the bibliography of twenty-eight pages is magnificent. There is too much here for detailed discussion; it is enough to say that the book must be studied by all who wish to claim excellence in this field. It will be the standard reference for many years to come.

A COMPETENT general and reasonably current review of the field today, but of a rather pedagogical style. Despite the passim references to semiotics and more subtle questions, the over-view is rather conventional. By its intended student audience, however, this book is quite well met.
