News and Announcements - International Goat Association V INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON GOATS This conference will be held in New Delhi, India in early 1992. According to Dr. R.M. Acharya, President of the International Goat Association, who arranges the conferences, the first mailings have been sent out with information on time, scope of the conference and a call for papers. If you did not receive this mailing, such can be requested from Dr. R.M. Acharya. Members of the Organizing Committee are: (1) R.M. The conference will include plenary sessions, symposia, reports of original research and workshops. In addition, tours to areas of interest are being planned. Conference topics will include: genetics and breeding for milk, meat and fiber; nutrition - - feed resources; nutrition and behavior in feeding; production, quality and processing of meat and products; production, quality and processing of fiber and skins; disease problems and control of mortality; adaptation and management for different environments; systems of production and socioeconomics; reproductive techniques in females; reproductive techniques in males; human nutrition and health in relation to goat milk and products. Begin planning now to attend this international conference and also to visit the unique wonders of India. INTERIM MEETING OF IGA OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS A meeting of officers and directors of IGA was held in Cairo, Egypt, on 5 November 1988 in conjunction with the workshop on Small Ruminant Research and Development in the Near East. Meetings are held as part of international conferences. Dr. A.A. About-Naga arranged the meeting. Present also were Dr. C. Devendra, Dr. P. Morand-Fehr, Dr. J. Boyazoglu, and Dr. G.F.W. Haenlein. Agenda items included the V International Conference on goats, IGA membership, the Small Ruminant Research journal, and the IGA newsletter. Information from this meeting will be made available to IGA membership after its approval by all officers and directors.

The cost of membership with subscription to 'Small Ruminant Research' has been slightly increased because cost of postage and handling, which was not charged by Elsevier for the first year of publication, must be included now. In addition to your renewal, be sure to encourage your colleagues to join. Also, it is important that the university, library, other institution or government agency, where you work subscribe to the journal. This can be done on forms provided by Elsevier Science Publishers. Small Ruminant Research With the close of 1988 the first volume with 4 issues and the first year of publication is concluded. Elsevier Science Publishers, Editor-in-Chief George F.W. Haenlein and the Editorial Advisory Board and all reviewers are to be congratulated for the establishment of a quality journal which fills an essential role.

GOAT-RELATED MEETINGS AND CONFERENCES It is the intent of IGA to publicize goat-related programs. Following is a list of such programs: 1. II International Colloquium of Niort "Goat D i s e a s e s and Production", J u n e 1 9 8 9 . Proposed themes include: diseases and new techniques of reproduction; diseases and international trade; diseases, production and milk technology; diseases and developing systems; slow viruses; diseases, meat and fiber production; diseases and human health. More information can be obtained by writing to the Colloquium at: B.P. 3081, 79012 Niort Cedex, France. 2. II S y m p o s i u m on Goat Management in Arid Zones. Coquimbo, Chile. October 1990. The program will include presentations on the various topics of the symposium by speakers with international reputations. More information can be obtained by writing to Dr. Patricio Azocar C., President of the Organizing Committee, II Symposium on Goat Management in Arid Zones, Casilia 13, IV Region, Coquimbo, Republic of Chile. 3. International S y m p o s i u m on D a i r y Goat Production and E c o s y s t e m s . 3 0 M a y - 3 June, 1 9 8 9 . Yang Ling, Shaanxi, China. Programs will include breeding, feeding, management, reproduction, milk, milk products, and ecology. Persons interested in participating were encouraged to submit one-page abstracts of papers they would like to present. Abstracts will be evaluated and invitations extended accordingly. Requests for more information about the symposium or abstracts of papers should be addressed to Prof. Liu Yinwu, P.O. Box 132, Northwestern Agricultural University, Yang Ling, Shaanxi, China. 4. Cognosac. During the 1984 International Congress on Colored Sheep and their Products in New Zealand, a Committee on Genetic Nomenclature of Sheep and Goats (COGNOSAG) was founded. President is Dr. Alexander L. Rae, Professor of sheep husbandry at Massey University Palmerston North, New Zealand. Vice Presidents are Dr. C.H. Scott Dolling of McLaren Vale, South Australia and Dr. P. Millar of the Commonwealth Bureau of Animal Breeding and Genetics at Edinburgh, Scotland. Secretary is Dr. J.J. Lauvergne, Department of Animal Genetics of INRA, Jouy-en-Josas, France.

87 This committee has already been quite productive with annual workshops at Gontard/Manosque, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France, in July 1986, 1987 and 1988. The 1986 proceedings are available since February 1988. They contain the first rules of nomenclature for sheep and goat genes and chromosomes and a first list of karyotypic defects and discussion of colour and serologic polymorphisms. Allelic series of blood and milk polymorphisms and visible traits except colour were elaborated during the 1987 Workshop and these proceedings will be available in print in early 1989. Coat colour genes of sheep and goats were the main topic of the 1988 Workshop and the printed proceedings are expected to be available, like the other proceedings, from the secretary of COG-
