.[. E. Legates is Dean of the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University. He was born in Milford, Delaware, on August 1, 1922, and grew up on a dairy farm in southern Delaware. He received the B.S. degree with distinction in 1943 from the University of Delaware. From 1943 to 1946 he served in the U. S. Marine Corp Reserve attaining the rank of captain. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Iowa State University in 1947 and 1949, respectively. Dr. Legates was appointed to the faculty in the Department of Animal Science at North Carolina State University in 1949. He served that institution as Assistant Professor (194951), Associate Professor (1951-54), Professor (1954-56), and Win. Neal Reynolds Professor since 1956. From 1955 to 1958 he was Acting Head of the Dairy Husbandry Section, in 1958 he was named Head of the Animal Breeding Section, and in 1971 he was appointed Dean of the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences. His research has dealt primarily with the improvement of dairy cattle through selection. He has led investigations dealing with the heritability of nonfat solids, protein, mastitis, and 505

T. I. Hedriek, Professor of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Michigan State University, was born September 11, 1912, in Poison, Montana. B.S. and M.S. degrees were in Dairy Industry, Montana State University and his Ph.D. in Dairy Bacteriology, Iowa State University. He served on the Dairy Industry faculty for three years at Montana State University and two years at Iowa State University. Other positions were: Director of Laboratories, North Star Dairies, St. Paul, Minn., 1946-49; Coordinator of Laboratories, U.S.D.A., A.M.S., Dairy Division, Chicago, Ill., 1949-1955. He has been at Michigan State University since 1956. His duties include teaching graduate, undergraduate, and short course classes; management of Dairy Plant; consulting for industry; advising in underdeveloped countries; serving as advisor for graduate students; and directing dairy related research. He is the author or co-author of 250 articles and a book, Drying of Milk and Milk Products. Several of the articles were published in German, Austrian, or Spanish. He is coinventor of a patent on rapid curing of Blue Cheese. Dr. Hedrick has been a member of ADSA for 35 years. Currently, he is a member of the International Committee. LOUIS J. BOYD

Louis J. Boyd was born in Graves County, Kentucky, March 14, 1928. He received the B.S. (1950) and M.S. (1951) degrees from the University of Kentucky and served on the Dairy Extension Staff at that institution from 1951 to 1953. He was awarded the Ph.D. degree by the University of Illinois in 1956 and joined the faculty of the Dairy Department at the University of Tennessee, where he was engaged in teaching and research for six years. From 1963 to 1972 Dr. Boyd held appointment in Extension, Research, and Teaching in the Dairy Science Department at Michigan State University. He was promoted to Professor in 1968 and was recipient of Michigan State's Outstanding Extension Specialist Award in 1971. Dr. Boyd moved to the University of Georgia in July, 1972, as Chairman of the Animal Science Division (including Dairy Science). Dr. Boyd's prime Extension and Research interests have been in the improvement of reproductive efficiency in cattle. He wrote articles for the Artificial Breeding Column in JOURNAL OF DAIRY SCIENCI~ VOL. 56, N o . 4

Honorary organizations are: Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, Alph Zeta, Gamma Sigma Delta, and Phi Tan Sigma. He served on the Advisory Committee for Dairy, Fats, and Oil Products; Quartermaster Food and Container Institute; National Research Council; and a number of national and state dairy industry committees. He has participated on the invitational programs of the International Dairy Congress in Munich and Sydney, in addition to presenting technical talks in several countries. Another activity was to serve as Short-term Advisor in Indonesia for the Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities. He is a member of the Consortium for the Development of Technology to assist in Central American countries. Dr. Hedrick was presented the DRINC Research Award in 1972 by ADSA. A citation and cash award were given to him in 1955 for outstanding leadership and proficiency in performance of administrative duties by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Other awards were: outstanding services by National Ice Cream Retailers Association, 1965; outstanding lay activities by Rock River Conference, United Methodist Church, 1954; and builder of good citizenship by Capital City Civitan Club (Lansing), 1965. T. /G-istoffersen is Chairman and Professor, Department of Food Science and Nutrition, The Ohio State University and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center. He was born in Nyk/Sbing Falster, Denmark. He received the B.S. degree in 1946 from the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural College, Copenhagen, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Iowa State University in 1948 and 1954, respectively. Dr. Kristoffersen has six years of industrial experience with Danish dairy companies. He has served as Research Assistant at the Danish Government Dairy Research Station, 19461948, and Laboratory Supervisor and Instructor at Iowa State University, 1948-1954, before joining the faculty of The Ohio State University a s a Research Associate in 1955. chemistry and microbiology of cheese ripening, but has included studies on butter and low fat spreads, cultured dairy foods, sanitizers, and heat effects on milk. He has authored or coauthored 80 scientific and technical articles. His teaching experiences have been in lipid and fermented dairy foods, milk composition and analysis, and evaluation of dairy foods. Dr. Kristoffersen has been a member of the American Dairy Science Association since 1948. He is presently (1972-73) serving as Chairman of the Dairy Foods Division and has served on the following Association Committees: Member, Butter Standards, 1959-61; Coordinator, Graduate Student Scientific Paper Presentation, Manufacturing, 1967; Member, 1968, and Chairman, 1969, Pfizer Award Selection Committee. He is a member of American Society for Microbiology, Institute of Food Technology, Ohio Environmental Health Association, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Ohio Academy of Science, Gamma Sigma Delta, Sigma Xi, Phi Lambda Upsilon, and Phi Tau Sigma. Candidates for Chairman of the Dairy Foods Division ROBERT T. MARSHALL

Robert T. Marshall is Professor, Food Science and Nutrition, University of Missouri, Columbia. He was born near Springfield, Missonri on July 27, 1932. He received the B.S. degree (Dairy Manufacturers) in 1954 from the University of Missouri. He then served three years as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force in Europe. He obtained M.S. (1958) and Ph.D. (1960) degrees from the University of Missouri, Columbia. Dr. Marshall joined the faculty of the Department of Dairy Husbandry, University of Missouri, Columbia in 1960. He transferred to the Department of Food Science and Nutrition in 1967 and became Professor in that deparlanent in 1970. He has taught virtually every course related to milk and milk products at UMC. Currently, he teaches two courses in dairy technology, two courses in food microbiology, a course in food quality and sanita-

tion, and coaches the Dairy Products Evaluation team. His research pertains to psychrotrophic microorganisms and their enzymes in foods, mastitis, and dairy plant engineering. In the latter he is cooperator with two USDA Agricultural Engineers. He has authored or coauthored more than 65 scientific papers. Activities in ADSA include member and chairman, Committee on Evaluation of Dairy Products; secretary, vice-chairman, and chairman, Industry and Business Section; and Program Committee, 1973. He is a member of the Intersoeiety Council for the 14th edition of Standard Methods for the Examination of Dairy Products, He represents the International Association of Milk, Food and Environmental Sanitarians to the A.P.H.A. Technical Committee on the Methods for the Biological Examination of Foods. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Milk and Food Technology. At UMC he is Secretary of the Graduate Faculty Senate and represents the Biological Sciences Sector in the Senate. Dr, Marshall has held or currently holds the following offices: President and Treasurer, Gamma Sigma Delta; President and Treasurer, Missouri Farm House Association; Superintendent State F.F.A. Contest in Milk Quality and Dairy Foods; and Advisor, National F.F.A. Contests Committee. He is a member of Sigma Xi, Gamma Sigma Delta, Omieron Delta Kappa, Alpha Zeta, Phi Eta Sigma, ADSA, I.F.T., International Association of Milk Food and Environmental Sanitarians, American Society for Microbiology and Missouri Mastitis Council. He received the Faculty-Alumni Award from the University of Missouri Alumni Association, the Junior Faculty Award from Gamma Sigma Delta, and was made Honorary State Farmer by the Missouri F.F.A. Born in Edmund, Wisconsin, February 8, 1931, Dr. Olson received the B.S. degree

(1953) from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. From 1953 to 1955 he served in the U.S. Army in the grade of Lieutenant. After completing his tour of duty, he entered the University of Wisconsin and received his M.S. (1957) and Ph.D. (1959) degrees. Since 1959 Dr. Olson has been a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin, presently holding the tire of Professor of Food Science. His research relates to chemistry, microbiology and technology of cheese products, and the use of enzymes in food processing. Teaching includes short courses in the cheese industry on campus and, in a statewide program, courses in principles of cheese manufacture and, presently a course in food fermentations. Dr. Olson is also author of the book entitled, Ripened Semisoft Cheeses. He is also a recipient of the Pfizer, Inc. Award administered annually by the American Dairy Science Association. Dr. Olson has served as secretary of the Graduate Biological Division at the University of Wisconsin and activities in the American Dairy Science Association include: Secretary of Dairy Foods Division, 1971-72; Vice-Chairman of Dairy Foods Division, 1972-73; member of Committee on Evaluation of Dairy Products since 1967; member of Committee on Flavor Nomenclature and Reference Standards since 1968; Borden Award Selection Committee; and Manufacturing Section Nominating Committee. He also served as lecturer for the 18th International Dairy Congress (1970) and President of Wisconsin Association of Milk and Food Sanitarians (1971). He is a member of: Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Eta Sigma, Sigma Xi, American Dairy Science Association, American Society for Microbiology, Society for Industrial Microbiology, Institute of Food Technologists, and International Association of Milk, Food, and Environmental Sanitarians.
