This annual event has been the focus for a multitude of activities including an international scientific program with more than 40 speakers, plenty of “plaster on the table,” and clinical demonstrations. The Group Discussion lunches were as popular as ever with topics ranging from cleft lip and palate to computers, practice management, and Class II, Division 2 malocclusion. Clinical papers were numerous and varied. D. Di Biase gave a well-researched paper on functional and fixed appliance treatment in Class II, Division 1 cases, and A. Cockburn described the versatility of the BEDDTIOT fixed appliance system, which attempts to combine the best of Begg and straight wire appliances. Later N. W. T. Harradine extolled the virtues of the straight wire appliance and sliding mechanics and R. C. Parkhouse reminded delegates of the dangers of appliance treatment as he reported the case of a patient for whom orthodontic treatment resulted in a thoracotomy procedure. Prof. B. Thilander from Sweden, who reviewed the mechanisms of bone growth and condylar development and was able to establish a scientific rationale for treatment in the mixed dentition. R. Vanarsdall, Philadelphia, Pa., spoke on adult Itherapy and periodontal considerations. Profiles came under close scrutiny by R. Mullie from the Netherlands, who discussed the Begg appliance. On the final day, D. C. Tidy gave an excellent Belle Maudsley lecture on initial alignment wires and Prof. C. D. Stephens examined relief of lower incisor crowding with and without appliance treatment. Glawgow made many new friends and gave a particularly warm welcome to the attendees. The next British Orthodontic Conference will be held at the Metropole Hotel, Birmingham, Sept. 2629, 1989. This promises to be an excellent conference in the heart of IEngland, within easy reach of Stratford Upon Avon, Warwick Castle, and the Vale of Evesham. Robert Kirschen
