Programme announced for STLE’s May Seal service centres for John Crane John Crane has embarked on an new and retrofit applications. The meeting The STLE annual meeting in Toronto during May will include three sessions on seals, with 13 papers. The presentations are primarily concerned with rotary seals, mechanical and clearance types, with one on lip seals. A number of novel approaches appear to be included in the listed papers. There is also a panel discussion on

O-rings for ISO fittings from Parker Parker Hannifin has introduced O-rings designed to meet the requirements of metric tube fittings manufactured to ISO 6149. This ISO standard is intended to minimize the proliferation of port connection designs and provide leakfree connections. The fittings are intended for hydraulic lines, fuel and coolant on diesel engines and other applications where the seals are required to work in hydraulic
media and resist extrusion. The O-rings are available for all the ISO 6149 sizes from 6.1 to 56.6 mm in NBR, EPDM, HNBR and FKM materials. expansion programme that includes new Advanced Service Centres in Singapore and Russia. These centres are designed to make service capabilities available from facilities which are local to more of its international customers. Other new Centres are planned to open over the coming months. The Russian city of Perm is the location for the latest new Centre, and is providing Russian dry gas seal customers with local access to advanced seal testing, repair and refurbishment services. A new Russian joint venture company, LLC ‘John Crane – ISKRA’, is responsible for the facility. It is supplying customers in the region with gas seals and spares for both

New perfluoroelastomer improves sealing of steam Busak+Shamban is claiming a breakthrough in perfluoroelastomer sealing for steam and concentrated acids. At high temperatures, where perfluoroelastomer is considered the only effective elastomer sealing material, the new material is claimed to achieve better performance than competitive perfluoroelastomers. Tests, carried out in field applications and controlled laboratory conditions, involved immersion of Isolast J9512 and other leading FFKM materials in steam, for 1008 h, at a temperature of 260°C.
The new material exhibited minimal change in hardness, weight and volume. Other materials experienced surface blistering and swelling. A primary factor in the success of Isolast J9512 is considered to be the low compression set. Achieved as a material development objective, it has a compression set of 15% at 200°C for 72 h.
